Alright, we've been "training" Ike to sleep on his own through the night, especially, for about a month now. Essentially, this means that we haven't gone to him at night, and we let him figure out how to enter into his REM sleep cycles on his own. (It is my suspicion that he was conscientious enough of his surroundings starting at about 4 months that he would stir himself out of a sleep phase and before he went into another one, he'd wake completely up. By 6 months, he needed me in upwards of 6 times a night.) We have had TRUE success with it. For the past three nights he has slept all the way from 7 o'clock pm until 6 o'clock am!
Everything I've read in regard to infant sleep suggests that they first organize their night time sleep, then their day time sleep will follow suit...and that in order; the first nap will extend (Isaiah is known for his 30 minute "naps," so I am hoping that he will soon take at least two 1-hour+ naps) then the second and possibly third. It also says that by the time they organize, they'll be close to being ready to drop their third. Here's to the future!!!
He does seem to be extending his first nap. Today it was an 1:15 in the carseat, so that is a HUGE step for him. He pretty regularly takes a one hour nap at home. It is definitely still hit or miss. But I fully expect things to progress soon. Who knows how it will all happen, but, so far, life has taken a turn for the best! Mommy is getting 8 hours of sleep (though I still stir at 2:30 and have a bit of a time getting to sleep), and Daddy is no longer getting interrupted sleep. We are like new people -- all four of us!
